Checking in

I should apologize for the lack of posts - and I’m shocked to look at my stats and see that people seem to keep visiting.  So, here’s the rundown of the last six months in bullet format:

  • January:  found out we were pregnant!  whee!
  • February / March: ate a lot of smoothies, slept a lot, felt all around ooky and green, switched jobs
  • April: Baby crafting in high gear - learned to knit during the ‘ooky’ months.  No longer cringe at the sight of food magazines or blogs.  Start house hunting.
  • May: Still house hunting.  Do not want to buy a car.  Aiming to be ‘eco-parents‘.
  • June: Hello, where did the spring go to?  And for that matter, goodbye waist!

I’ve been giving some thought to blogging again here - maybe about trying to live in Ottawa with a baby and no car.  I get a lot of raised eyebrows when I say we don’t want to own a car.  I’m curious to see if we can manage.

Does Virtucar count?

You can most definitely live without a car (hell, I don’t even have a license) but it does make things harder. For the first 4-5 months it’s not too bad as you can use the infant bucket seats in taxis fairly easily (and trust me, you will be using the cab a lot, especially in the winter) but once the kid outgrows that, things get trickier.

Do you have some kind of car loan collective there like AutoShare or Zip Car? Those are great backups for when you need to go down to {shudder} Costco to load up on supplies.

I don’t think Virtucar counts as “car owning” - I’ve always wanted to try it out. We don’t really *need need* a car very often, but I’d probably get out to Ikea/Joe Fresh more often if I was a virtucar member. If we actually had space to load up on things like kitty litter, TP or laundry detergent, we’d probably hit the road more often.

I don’ t think it would be a problem unless you lived in the ‘burbs.

Hello Lana:

Congrats on the baby. Exciting times are ahead of your for sure. I have 2 of my own and they do change your life :-)… In a good way, I promise.

My family and I are moving from BC to Ottawa this summer so we are trying to ping bloggers that live in the capital city to get their feelings on a good place to live. Our budget is limited (no 1/2 mill houses) but we are looking for a good family place that is close to downtown. We are a single car family and wish to keep it that way. Once of us can drive, while the other can take transit.

What do you think of south Ottawa (hunt-club) or Orleans. I heard Kanata and Barrhaven are nice but far. Let me know if you can :-)

Cheers!
